Calcium Chloride vs RH Probe Moisture Tests: Which One Flooring Installers Trust for Concrete Slabs

What calcium chloride (ASTM F1869) actually measures

The calcium chloride test estimates Moisture Vapor Emission Rate (MVER). In plain English: it tries to quantify how much moisture is leaving the slab surface over time.

How it works (simplified):

  • A dish of calcium chloride is placed under a sealed dome on the slab.

  • The chemical absorbs moisture vapor.

  • The weight gain after a set time is used to calculate lbs of water per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours.

Why installers still use it:

  • It’s relatively quick and familiar.

  • Many adhesive and resilient flooring systems historically referenced MVER limits (example: “3 lbs” or “5 lbs” MVER thresholds).

But here’s the catch: it only reflects surface emissions during the test window. Surface conditions can be misleading if:

  • The slab was recently dried by HVAC.

  • The surface has densifiers, old cutback adhesive residue, or coatings.

  • The slab is drying unevenly.

  • You have moisture coming from below (no vapor retarder, high water table) and the “push” hasn’t stabilized yet.

What RH probes (ASTM F2170) actually measure

The RH probe test measures relative humidity inside the slab, not just what’s leaving the surface that day.

How it works (simplified):

  • Small holes are drilled into the slab.

  • Probes are inserted at a specified depth (commonly 40% depth for slabs drying from one side).

  • After the hole equilibrates, the probe reads internal RH and temperature.

Why many pros trust RH probes more:

  • It’s closer to a “what will the flooring experience long-term” metric.

  • It’s less sensitive to temporary surface drying.

  • It better predicts problems with adhesives and moisture-sensitive floors.

Reality check: RH testing is more technical. Bad drilling, wrong depth, or not waiting for equilibration can distort results. Done right, it’s a strong decision tool.

Which test do installers trust more and why?

Most modern flooring pros lean toward RH probes for critical installs, especially:

  • Glue-down luxury vinyl (LVP/LVT) where moisture can emulsify adhesive.

  • Engineered hardwood where internal moisture drives dimensional movement.

  • Basements where moisture conditions are inherently riskier.

Calcium chloride still shows up when:

  • A manufacturer specifically requires it.

  • You’re comparing legacy specs.

  • You need a quick screening alongside other indicators.

Pass/fail isn’t universal: the product determines the “limit”

This is where homeowners get burned: there’s no single “safe moisture number” for all floors.

  • Some resilient products allow higher RH if paired with a specific moisture mitigation system.

  • Some adhesives have strict maximums (and the adhesive spec can be more limiting than the plank spec).

  • Hardwood is generally less forgiving than vinyl.

A professional approach is to match the test method and limit to:

  1. the exact product, 2) the installation method (floating vs glue-down), and 3) whether mitigation is planned.

The short “smart installer” checklist

If you want to sound like you’ve done this before, ask these questions:

  • Which test method will you use and why: ASTM F1869, ASTM F2170, or both?

  • What’s the manufacturer RH/MVER limit for my exact flooring + adhesive?

  • Will you measure slab pH too? (High pH can also break adhesives.)

  • If moisture is high, what’s the mitigation plan: epoxy moisture barrier, primer + self-leveler system, or a product switch?

  • How will transitions and perimeter details be handled to avoid trapping moisture?

If you’re installing over concrete and want the most reliable picture of risk, RH probe testing is usually the more trusted indicator, because it reads what’s happening inside the slab. Calcium chloride can still be useful, but it’s best treated as a surface snapshot, not a crystal ball.
